How to avoid feeling homesick while studying abroad?
The feeling of being away from home, going away from the beloved family usually starts when people start packing their bags. This feeling is mostly excitement mixed with sadness. The happiest at this time are the parents. Fathers will call up their friends and proudly tell them about their kid going to one of the best universities to study. Mothers will talk about how hard their kid has worked to come so far. Mothers will always be the emotional ones and you’ll see them crying quite a few times. They will also mostly be seeing packing snacks. Most people are so overwhelmed at this point that they do not realize how much they’ll miss the happy voices and faces of their family and friends for a very long time now. People work very hard for getting A grade scores and making it to one of world's top universities. Their parents equally work hard and spend a lot of money. Most of the people find difficult to survive in a foreign country but somehow they make it through. There are so many people who graduate from school and move to big universities across the world to make their dreams come true. They often struggle so hard to adapt to the culture, food, language with the burden of studying and dealing with competition that sometimes just piles on. There are only a select few who do not get so affected. But there are ways that people discover over a period of time that help them survive and avoid missing home, family and their friends. We’d like to share the same with all the people who are in such a situation and are trying hard to cope. First of all you need to understand a few things; - This is a temporary phase of life and is for your own good - You worked really hard to get here and you can't afford to mess it up - Your parents have worked equally hard and you don’t want to ever disappoint them - This time away from home will only make you stronger and successful in life - Where you are most people only dream of - And this is where you wanted to be. So cherish it. Once you tell yourself all of these things it'll get easier for you to stay strong and not feel homesick. What is it that you can do to cope with this situation? The points given below are what I did and I'm sure it will help you as well. - Find time to Skype your parents or chat with them regularly because the way you need their support they need your attention. - Send pictures to them regularly about what you're doing and ask them to do the same. This way you'll be connected throughout. - Make new friends and learn about their culture. This opportunity you may not get again so make the most of it - Explore the country you're in. There are people in the world who don't make enough money and end up never traveling internationally. - Learn the local language. This will help increase your knowledge and will help you adapt faster in the new country - Stay in touch with your old friends through emails, Facebook whatever it is that you are comfortable with. - Pick up a hobby. This is one the easiest ways to keep yourself occupied. If you can't find a hobby you should make exercise a daily routine. Make a timetable for yourself and stick to it. The key is to keep yourself distracted from negative emotions that make you feel like you have to go back home right away. You have spent so many years of your life working hard and now is the time to make the most for a fulfilling tomorrow. Once you're successful you will look back at these days and smile. This is the turning point in your life you can make or break your career now. Your family and friends will always be with you. Just a matter of a few years.
